The World Health Organization Executive Council has approved the Sultanate of Oman and the Federal Republic of Switzerland’s proposal on the “Global Health for Peace” initiative, which seeks to strengthen and activate the relationship between health, social harmony and peace.
The Oman Ministry of Health stated that, “The proposal of the Sultanate of Oman and the Federal Republic of Switzerland on the ‘Global Health for Peace’ initiative has been approved within the meetings of the 150th current session of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland. The initiative received great support from member states of the Council.”
The initiative seeks to strengthen and activate the relationship between health, social harmony and peace by focusing on the unique role that public health projects can play in bringing together various groups and building trust in all elements of peace.
In a joint effort by Oman, Switzerland and the Regional Director for the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, the Health for Peace Initiative (HPI) was launched in 2019. This landmark event took place in Geneva and was attended by more than 50 representatives of 24 WHO member states and partners.
The initiative supports the success of health schemes and related principles of equality, inclusion, participation and pursuit of peace dividends through leadership.
In the WHO Executive Council meeting, Oman was represented by Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Sa’eedi, Minister of Health, while the Ministry’s undersecretaries and top officials also joined the meeting via videoconference.
In addition to health ministers, a large number of high-level officials from different countries took part in the meeting.
