Russia and Ukraine release 230 captives following UAE’s 7th mediation effort

The UAE’s seventh mediation effort has resulted in the release of 230 captives from Russia and Ukraine, 115 captives from both sides.

The latest exchange was revealed during Ukraine’s 33rd Independence Day from the Soviet Union. This exchange comes less than a month after the previous exchange where 190 captives were released, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to being a reliable mediator supporting diplomacy to resolve the crisis between the two countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed its appreciation to the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ukraine for their cooperation with the UAE’s mediation efforts. The Ministry also underscored that the UAE’s strong ties and partnerships with both countries are instrumental in making the new mediation successful.

In addition to this, the Ministry affirmed the UAE’s commitment to initiating efforts with an aim to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, highlighting the importance of dialogue, and de-escalation, as the only ways to deal with the conflict, and reduce its humanitarian repercussions.

The new mediation is the seventh mediation of this year, the UAE’s mediation efforts have succeeded in completing exchanges of war captives between Russia and Ukraine.  In addition to this, the UAE has succeeded in the exchange of two prisoners between the United States and the Russian Federation in December 2022.

January 3 witnessed one of the biggest exchanges where the two countries exchanged a total of 478 captives following mediation by the UAE. The UAE ministry also highlighted that the total number of captives exchanged through its mediation efforts has reached 1,788.
