United Arab Emirates received an endorsement from the Asia Pacific Group (APG) endorsed towards its candidacy to a seat on the Security Council in the term 2022-2023 during a meeting chaired by Zhang Jun, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of China to the UN.
UAE received the endorsement of over 40 members in the meeting including Oman and India. Oman’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mr. Mohamed Al Hassan had asked for the backing of the APG for the UAE candidacy, which was seconded by Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and Ambassador Mr. T. S. Tirumurti.
AGP usually nominates its member for the candidacy one year prior to the elections. The Security Council elections for the 2022-2023 term will be held in June 2021.
The group recognized UAE’s efforts in maintaining peace, supporting women empowerment and inclusiveness along with its efforts in combating terrorism and establishing multilateralism in the Arab region. UAE’s progressive thoughts in planning and development and ensuring safety and security across the world were also appreciated by them.
Mrs. Lana Nusseibeh, UAE Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations replied for the extended support, “We thank the APG for its support and confidence in the UAE as its representative in the Council for the period 2022-2023.”
“We are stronger when we are united to address the most complex problems in the world, and when we work together to achieve a more peaceful and inclusive global community. The Security Council is an indispensable platform for resolving conflicts and promoting stability and security for all. The UAE’s unwavering commitment to the Charter of the United Nations is reflected in our ongoing work to promote inclusion, build resilience, promote innovation, and secure peace – goals shared by all members of the APG.”
The UAE has already held the seat in the term 1986-87 and is the sole candidate for the swing seat for Arab nations.
