The Saudi Space Agency (SSA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the field of exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
This strategic agreement is seen as the culmination of the support and empowerment provided to the space sector by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Crown Prince and Chairman of the Supreme Space Council, and the diligent efforts made between the two sides to develop the strategic relationship between the two countries.
The agreement aims to enhance their cooperation in the field of space and scientific exploration, increase joint investment in various commercial activities, and establish a comprehensive legal framework that facilitates cooperation between them for the exchange of expertise and the development of joint programs. It outlines areas of joint work between the two parties, which include space and earth sciences, aeronautics, space missions, education, and many other areas of mutual interest.
“The agreement represents a turning point in the Kingdom’s journey towards building a strong and prosperous space sector, noting that it reflects the Kingdom’s firm commitment to progress and innovation in the field of space, and its continuous efforts to enhance its position as an important partner on the global stage for space exploration and scientific discovery.”
His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Altamimi, CEO of the Saudi Space Agency, explained that this strategic partnership will identify areas of mutual interest and seek to develop cooperative collaborations, enhancing national capabilities in the fields of aeronautics, space exploration, and space applications. This will enable the Kingdom to capitalize all available opportunities to achieve scientific and technological progress and strengthen its role as a key player in this field both regionally and globally.
NASA Administrator Mr. Bill Nelson, commented that, “Building on my visit to Saudi Arabia earlier this year, I look forward to strengthening our cooperation for the future of exploration. We are living in the golden era of exploration, one that is rooted in partnership. This new agreement outlines how we’ll work together, and explore together, for the benefit of humanity.”
According to the agreement signed, the agreed programs will be implemented in various uses such as flight operations, balloon campaigns, scientific data exchange, participation in joint workshops and meetings, as well as many other activities that enhance cooperation and progress in the field of space. The agreement is expected to consolidate the future of cooperation between the two countries in this vital sector and represents an important step towards achieving potential benefits for both, while also enhancing the Kingdom’s position as a key player in the space sector both regionally and globally.
The space sector in the Kingdom receives significant interest, support, and empowerment from the wise leadership, recognizing it as the next trillion-dollar economy and a sector that stimulates innovation and inspires generations. Through its ambitious Saudi Vision 2030, the Kingdom aims to strengthen its position in the world of space and the industry of its technologies.
