Ramdev’s COVID-19 Medicine, CORONIL stopped by India’s Ayush Ministry

India's Patanjali Ayurved led by Baba Ramdev has been instructed to stop all promotions and sales regarding its alleged cure for COVID-19 until the Ayush Ministry verifies and approves of the product.

Hours after Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved made the grandiose reveal of CORONIL, its alleged Ayurvedic medicine for COVID-19, India’s Ministry of AYUSH has directed the firm to stop all advertising and sales of the drug.

Patanjali which claims that the new drug exhibited significant success rate in treating positive COVID-19 subjects in its trials has been asked to furnish details of the drug’s composition and the research the company has conducted prior to its launch.

“Patanjali Ayurved Ltd has been asked to provide at the earliest details of the name and composition of the medicines being claimed for COVID treatment; site(s)/hospital(s), where the research study was conducted for COVID-19; protocol, sample size, Institutional Ethics Committee clearance, CTRI registration and results in data of the study (ies) and stop advertising/publicizing such claims till the issue is duly examined.”

Uttarakhand government, where Patanjali is headquartered in has been directed to provide copies of license and approval details granted for the manufacture of CORONIL.

Launching its product yesterday, Patanjali alleged that the medicine can cure COVID-19 within 14 days. While the Ministry of AYUSH stated that “Facts of the claim and details of the stated scientific study are not known to the Ministry.”

Later, AYUSH minister Shripad Naik stated that Patanjali Ayurved Ltd’s drug for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) will be given a go-ahead only after the government looks into the report sent by the company promoted by yoga guru Ramdev.

“They even said that they have sent a report. We’ll look into it and permission will be given after seeing the report,” Mr. Naik appended.

Following the ministry’s order, Ramdev’s associate and Patanjali co-founder Acharya Balakrishna tweeted to announce that the “communication gap” has been filled and maintained that 100% parameters laid down for controlled trial of the Ayurvedic product have been observed.

“This government encourages Ayurveda and works for its glory, the communication gap has been filled and we have given the AYUSH ministry all the information regarding the 100% fulfillment of all the standard parameters of Randomized Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trials,” Balakrishna tweeted in the native language Hindi.
