OpenAI has stated that it was testing new reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini, in a sign of growing competition with rivals such as Google to create smarter models capable of tackling complex problems.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the AI startup plans to launch the o3 mini by the end of January, and the full o3 after that, as more robust large language models could outperform existing models and attract new investments and users.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched new AI models In September, designed to dedicate more time to processing queries and solving complex problems.
The AI firm had said in a blog post that the o1 models are capable of reasoning through complex tasks and can solve more challenging problems than previous models in science, coding, and math.
OpenAI’s new o3 and o3 mini models, which are in internal safety testing currently, will be more powerful than its previously launched o1 models, the company noted.
The GenAI pioneer said it was opening up an application process for external researchers to test o3 models ahead of the public release, which will close on January 10.
OpenAI sparked an AI arms race with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The company’s rising popularity and new product releases contributed to its success in securing a $6.6 billion funding round in October.
OpenAI has also rolled out a beta update for its ChatGPT application on MacOS, which allows it to work directly with more coding and notetaking apps. The ChatGPT Beta provides support for coding apps including Warp, IntelliJ IDEA, and PyCharm, with its o1 and o1 pro modes. The launched version will work on note-taking apps Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip. With both text and voice options to navigate.
