The Green Organization, an international non-profit environment group, has recognized the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) in the International Beautiful Buildings Green Apple Awards 2022.
The award was given to the NMoQ in the category of Public Building for its sustainability best practices, which included the museum’s extensive green features, from planning and design to construction management and building operations.
The Beautiful Buildings Green Apple Awards are a global campaign that honors sustainable buildings and promotes positive contributions to the built environment.
Since its opening in 2019, the NMoQ has won numerous sustainability awards, including the distinction of being the world’s first national museum to receive both a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold and a 4 Star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) sustainability rating.
LEED is the world’s most widely used green building rating system. LEED certifications are globally recognized symbols of sustainability achievements, whereas GSAS is the MENA region’s first performance-based system developed for rating green buildings and infrastructure.
The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) gives voice to Qatar’s rich heritage and culture. Its vibrant and immersive space offers visitors to experience Qatar’s past, present and future. Central to the vision of the museum is intergenerational learning for all ages through its multilayered thematic exhibits, interactivity and programming.
The unique design of the NMoQ building, developed by French architect Mr. Jean Nouvel, was inspired by the complex form of the desert rose, which is found in Qatar’s arid desert regions. In addition to the stunning architecture and gallery spaces, the building also features a 220-seat auditorium, two restaurants, a café and a traditional food forum.
