The Indian industrialist and philanthropist, Ratan Tata, who served as the Chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons from 1990 to 2012, has passwd away on October 9, 2024, around 11pm IST. 

Ratan Naval Tata, 86, was the man whose visionary and commitment has made fruitful growth in Indian business ecosystem. for 22 years, Ratan Tata oversaw the expansion and modernization of Tata Group, a major global enterprise based in Mumbai.

The History

Ratan Tata was born in Mumbai, then Bombay, on 28 December 1937. He was the son of Naval Tata, who was born in Surat and later adopted into the Tata family, and Sooni Tata, the niece of Tata group founder Jamshedji Tata. Being an Alumni of the Cornell University, in 2008, Tata gifted Cornell $50 million, becoming the largest international donor in the university’s history.

Tata Sons serves as the primary investment arm, with 66 percent of its equity held by charitable trusts that support education, healthcare, and the arts. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Tata companies generated over $165 billion in revenue and employed over 1 million people.

Each Tata company operates independently under its own board of directors. As of March 31, 2024, the group’s aggregate market capitalization of over $365 billion included the shares of 26 publicly traded companies.

Honors

Ratan Tata received the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008, the third and second highest civilian honors awarded by the Government of India. Tata has also received various state civilian honors such as ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’ in 2006 for his work in the public administration in Maharashtra and ‘Assam Baibhav’ in 2021 for his contribution towards furthering cancer care in Assam.

Ratan Tata launched the ambitious project of affordable passenger car that would appeal to the many Indians who ride motorcycles, through the ‘Tata Nano’. His vision was to provide every Indian middle class family with their affordable dream car. It was priced one lakh rupees or $2,000.
