The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has extended the clean energy partnership with Mediclinic Middle East, the UAE’s prominent private healthcare provider.

The agreement is the extension of pre-existing partnership, aiming to promote decarbonization in the UAE’s health sector. EWEC will supply all of Mediclinic’s cutting-edge facilities in Abu Dhabi, such as high standard hospitals and comprehensive primary care clinics, with electricity produced using clean energy sources 24/7.

Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) will verify to ensure that the electricity consumed by an entity is generated using clean energy. EWEC has been a driving force in the adoption of Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) in Abu Dhabi, with increasing engagement across various economic sectors.

“EWEC is proud to strengthen and continue our partnership with Mediclinic Middle East, the first healthcare group to utilize clean energy in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, showcasing our mutual commitment to sustainability. Globally, the healthcare sector accounts for between five to eight per cent of electricity consumption, and this agreement underscores the importance of taking tangible steps to decarbonize this key sector. By ensuring that Mediclinic’s Abu Dhabi facilities are powered entirely by clean energy, we are jointly making significant steps towards making the healthcare sector a leader in community-focused, environmentally conscious stewardship.”

Hein van Eck, Chief Executive Officer of Mediclinic Middle East, commented that, “Partnering with EWEC to power our leading Abu Dhabi medical facilities with clean energy aligns with our commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. This initiative not only enhances our operations but also contributes to our broader decarbonization initiatives across the company to improve energy efficiency across our facilities. We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with EWEC to achieve our sector leading energy goals, and becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”

The CECs are tradable digital certificates that are compliant with the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC Standard) and represent the ownership of environmental and economic benefits of using clean energy.

EWEC operates as a sole registrant and auction operator for implementing the CECs scheme issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE).The certificates play a vital role in the transition to reducing carbon emissions, and in achieving the goals of the UAE Net Zero 2050.
