The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with APM Terminals Bahrain, which owns and operates Khalifa bin Salman Port.
The MoU was signed by Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of EWA, and Matthew Luckhurst, Managing Director of APM Terminals Bahrain.
Within the framework of the MoU, a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) system with a total capacity of 11.5 megawatts (MW) will be installed along multiple connection points spread across an extended area measuring approximately 66,725 square meters.
The EWA President underscored the authority’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the private sector to utilise renewable energy in various domains, in line with the National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP). The NREAP set targets of 5 percent renewable energy by 2025 and 10 percent by 2035.
Kamal bin Ahmed said that the photovoltaic system, comprising around 20,000 panels, is anticipated to generate more than 18 gigawatt hours of electricity annually. This will cover the company’s total annual energy consumption and significantly reduce carbon emissions by approximately 10 million tons each year.
Ahmed emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing the efficiency of energy use in seaports.
For his part, Luckhurst said that the MoU is considered an important step in achieving Bahrain’s renewable energy goals and protecting the environment.
Luckhurst also highlighted the importance of the project in ensuring the sustainability of maritime transport in the Kingdom.
