Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has commissioned a reservoir in Hatta, with a storage capacity of 30 million imperial gallons (MIG) of desalinated water.
The landmark project, which costs about AED 86 million ($23.4 million), covers the construction of supporting buildings along with the extension of entrance and exit pipes.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated that the water reservoir project in Hatta supports the Comprehensive Development Plan for Hatta, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
DEWA’s reservoirs aim to enhance water flow and raise the volume of the Emirate’s water reserves, to cater to the surging demand and increase the efficiency and reliability of water networks to accelerate sustainable development in Dubai.
Al Tayer also highlighted that DEWA commissioned two water reservoirs in Lusaily and Enkhali this year, and is developing a 120 MIG reservoir in Hassyan. The Authority aims to boost the storage capacity to 1,121 MIG by the first quarter of 2025. These initiatives reflect DEWA’s unwavering commitment to driving sustainable growth across the region.
DEWA is undertaking a project to store six billion gallons of water in aquifers, which can be retrieved when needed. This strategic reserve of over 50 million gallons of desalinated water will provide the Emirate with 90-day emergency supply of water per day. In addition, the initiative will ensure that the stored water maintains its quality, protected from external factors.
