The mystery-party-action game ‘Among Us’ has become the most downloaded mobile game on both Android and iOS app stores in 2020, according to the data released by the leading app intelligence provider Apptopia.
Among Us, developed by the US-based game studio Innersloth has secured the leading position by beating popular games like PUBG Mobile, Roblox and Call of Duty. According to data revealed by Apptopia, Among Us was downloaded 264 million times globally and 41 million in the US.
The second position was secured by Subway Surfers with 227 million downloads followed by Garena Free Fire at the third spot with 218 million downloads. The most popular game PUBG which confronted many setbacks last year including a ban in India was at fourth position with 175 million downloads.
Despite releasing in 2018 Among Us couldn’t secure its foot in the gaming market until last year. The online multi-player deduction game, in which spaceship crew members work together to complete tasks and root out imposters before they’re virtually murdered, became a hit on the live streaming platform Twitch during the COVID-19 lockdown.
As per mobile app data provider Sensor Tower, Among Us was the most downloaded mobile game worldwide in November 2020. The game posted 53.2 million installs, which shows a 50 times increase from November 2019. Among Us became so popular that the developer actually canceled its sequel plan in order to keep working on the original.
The developers are planning to release the game Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft has confirmed that Among Us will be launched in its console in 2021.
