Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the Government of Rwanda have signed a AED92 million ($25 million) loan agreement to elevate water security in Rwanda.
The project aims to expand water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenge Water Treatment Plant. The initiative highlights ADFD’s commitment to boosting sustainable global development projects, such as SDG 6, which fosters clean and sustainable water.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, and John Mirenge, Ambassador of Rwanda to the UAE, signed the agreement. Senior officials from both sides also attended the signing ceremony.
“This agreement reflects ADFD’s commitment to financing infrastructure projects that promote economic and social progress in beneficiary countries. It also underscores our commitment to strengthening and advancing our strategic partnership with the Republic of Rwanda, contributing to the development of key sectors vital to the country’s growth.”
Director-General also highlighted the significance of the project in providing clean and sustainable water supplies to prime areas in Rwanda. The initiative is set to enhance the efficiency of the water system and incorporate cutting-edge technologies to elevate the country’s water security.
Mirenge, Ambassador of Rwanda to the UAE, stated that, “We are proud of this cooperation with Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which highlights the UAE’s steadfast efforts to promote sustainable development globally. The expansion of the water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenge Water Treatment Plant is a critical initiative to achieve our national objectives of providing clean water to our population and developing robust and sustainable water infrastructure to meet the needs of communities.”
John Mirenge also emphasized that the project would improve the living standard of Rwandan citizens by unlocking job opportunities and enhancing water distribution networks to meet the evolving demand. “This milestone aligns with our broader development plans and national objectives of achieving universal access to clean water,” added Mirenge.
In addition to expanding transmission and distribution systems to prime areas of the city, the water project includes the construction of a water treatment plant with a daily capacity of 36,000 cubic meters.
