Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has launched two new bridges, aimed at enhancing traffic flow between Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street towards Musaffah.

The $85.05 million (AED315 million) infrastructure project will reduce congestion, cutting average delays at the intersection by up to 80 percent during peak morning hours, while handling a staggering 7,500 vehicles per hour.

The project features a new three-lane flyover bridge on Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a new two-lane bridge linking Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street. In addition, the project incorporates dedicated infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.

The upgrades have enhanced service roads and sustainable landscaping. In total, the bridges consist of five lanes and are illuminated by 61 streetlights, with a total length of 742 meters and a surface area of 10,242m2.

Spanning 990 meters, the ramps are supported by 12 piers. More than 46,000m2 of street landscaping have also been upgraded, and 15,354m3 of concrete were used in their construction.

By working together with all stakeholders, DMT will accelerate the provision of the smart and sustainable infrastructure required by a growing population to move seamlessly through our city.”

Notably, the project was completed with over 3 million safe man-hours and accomplished a key safety milestone by completing the entire build with no lost time incidents (LTI).

The landmark project, a collaborative effort between DMT and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), aims to enhance the travel experience of commuters traveling to the city, and those heading to Zayed International Airport, Mussafah, and Hudayriyat Island.
